Is it time for a soft route server upgrade?
Dear fellow experts, I'm currently using an industrial PC (J1900), with a 4TB hard drive and a public IP address. Additionally, I have a personal domain name. As for the software, I've installed ESIR's OpenWRT full version, which includes various plugins. In terms of functionality, here are some features:1. Broadband dial-up connection
2. Scientific internet surfing
3. Dynamic DNS: The public IP is not fixed; it needs to be dynamically modified to correspond to the corresponding domain.
4. Cloud Dao: Private cloud, storing family photos, work files, etc.
5. Samba sharing: Sharing folders over a local network, projection, etc., playing media on mobile devices.
In addition, I use Aria2 for remote downloads. There's also a feature called 'disk sleep', which is suitable for a 4TB mechanical disk. Docker has been installed, enabling me to run scripts that download items from Taobao last year but now they expire after login.
Some issues include:
1. Problems with uploading photos; the preview window doesn't show up when opening the photo. It may be due to insufficient hardware configuration.
2. Slow performance in Samba sharing.
3. The ability to update BT nodes is inconvenient.
My requirements are as follows:
- Necessary functions: dialup connection, scientific internet surfing, dynamic DNS, private cloud (family photos + work cloud storage), shared file (local network media playback), remote downloading.
Hardware:
- N305 seems to have sufficient computing power and power consumption, but only single-channel memory; the 8505 is a dual-channel memory card, but the virtualization support seems to be average; the new U300 is a dual-channel memory card, without any information about its virtualization status because there isn't much online information available.
Software:
- Online searches seem to indicate that now most people don't use Openwrt as their base layer, although they might act as a side router or just use them as an overlay. Some options are:
1. PVE as the base layer and installing various virtualization systems, with good hardware compatibility and direct video output enabled by Intel VT-x, which can be quite challenging to set up.
2. ESXi as the base layer and then install another virtualization system, offering commercial stability and minimal virtualization consumption.
3. Windows Server + Hyper-V, with low entry costs and high potential for performance loss.
Based on these requirements, what platform solution would you recommend? Should we stick with Openwrt, or should we consider upgrading to something else like ESXi or even return to our original Openwrt setup? Please provide your suggestions and advice, thank you very much!
