Russia spends 59 billion rubles upgrading website-blocking system

The Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media plans to invest 59 billion rubles over the next five years in upgrading its Internet flow filtering capabilities. This funding will be used to upgrade the hardware for filtering internet traffic as well as to slow down or block access to certain resources. In response to Russia's full internet cut-off law passed in 2019, several foreign social media and internet companies were forced out of the country after the invasion of Ukraine, although many services can still be accessed through proxy servers. The upgrade will enable Russia's authorities to better restrict access via proxies. The agency’s press office stated that with increased traffic, new equipment is purchased annually since 2020.
