The Chinese authorities are planning to provide "net IDs" and "net certificates" for the country's over 1 billion Internet users, in order to verify their online identities. According to a notice released by the Ministry of Public Security and the State Council Information Office on Friday (July 26), the move is aimed at accelerating the implementation of China's strategy for trustable identity online. "Net IDs" consist of letters and numbers, which are bound to each person's identity information, but they will not reveal personal information. "Net Certificates" refer to digital documents that carry "net IDs". The official media explained that the plan aims to reduce risks of information leakage, and that discussions about it are currently underway with the public. As a result, once an account is banned, all platforms can be blocked with just one net ID.
